On plain films of the cervical spine the vertebral bodies are flattened and have
an ovoid appearance. The odontoid is truncated.
Sagittal T1 and T2W MR images show a severe stenosis of the spinal canal at C1
with associated cord contusion. The odontoid is hypoplastic and an os odontoideum
is positioned between the anterior arch of C1 and the base of the odontoid. C1 is subluxed
anteriorly on C2. Axial CT scans reveal cleft anterior and posterior arches of C1.
