Abnormal symmetric high signal is seen in the gray nuclei (basal ganglia + thalamus) on T1
images ( middle +right). Corresponding dark signal in the same regions is seen on a single
T2 axial (left).
Single voxel spectra reveal markedly elevated lactate peaks (doublet at 1.3 ppm).
Contrast CT axial images demonstrate diffusely low density throughout the cerebrum with
relative sparing (normal density) of the cerebellum and brainstem.
