Sagittal T2 image of the lumbar spine reveals disc dessication at L4-5 and L5-S1.
Disc at the latter level extends into the canal, causing canal stenosis. There is
a high intensity focus in the L4-5 disc. Accompanying axial T2 images show L5-S1
right paracentral disc herniation with extension of extruded disc into the
lateral recess. There is effacement of the traversing S1 nerve root, which appears
swollen more proximally (top right image). Hypertrophic facets and ligamentum
flavum hypertrophy are identified.
